Salvia apiana, the white sage, bee sage, or sacred sage, is an evergreen perennial shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, found mainly in the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California and Baja California, on the western edges of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. For hundreds of years, White Sage has been considered a sacred, cleansing, purifying, and protective plant. White Sage has been used in ceremonies to seek blessings of health and prosperity, release spirits, encourage protection. Native Americans and other indigenous peoples have burned sage for centuries as part of a spiritual ritual to cleanse a person or space, to seek blessings of health and prosperity, release spirits, encourage protection, to promote healing and wisdom. It's been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Romans to treat digestive issues, memory problems, and sore throats.

The name sage comes from the Latin “salvia,” which means, “to feel healthy.”

In many native cultures, plants are more than living things, they have a soul, a spirit, and sage was no different. Burning sage was a way of communing with the spiritual realm and connecting to the spirit of the plant and the earth. By burning the sage with intention, you are asking the spirit of the sage to lend its cleansing and protective energy into your space, body, energy, etc.

Taking sage internally have proven to have many health benefits at the physical/mental level, burning Sage and other sacred plants is done more for spiritual reasons.  Sage contains flavonoids -- plant compounds that have medicinal properties. Some of these compounds appear to improve brain health and guard against diseases like Alzheimer's. In one study of mice, sage extract improved memory. In other animal studies, sage helped against depression and anxiety. It also helps with digestive troubles, soothing upset stomachs. "It is calming to the gut and calming [to the mind], probably in the way lavender is calming," says Fleg, who’s also partnership coordinator for the Native Health Initiative, which aims to correct health inequalities among Native Americans. It's important to note that these studies were mainly done using sage extract. Whether burning sage has the same effects is still unknown.

DISCLAIMER:  As with everything else, in life there is always a good ethical way to do things, and the wrong unethical way to do them as well. There has been much controversy surrounding sage and particularly about selling it, specially for the past two years. Burning Sage and other Sacred plants have increased in popularity for personal use and used in ceremonies all over the world, but there are always people/companies who do things wrongfully, even illegally. Today many companies that are selling cheap bundles of sage, are not harvesting the herb sustainably, and because of this its natural habitat is being threatened. In order to grow back, sage leaves must be pruned correctly, and the base of the plant has to be left intact. However, many companies are simply clear cutting fields of sage—which means they’re cutting off the plant at the base, making it impossible for it to grow back. This kills the plants and over time, it can alter the natural ecosystem of the area. Then there are even those who are taking white sage from public lands without a permit.

An example of this can be found in this case. In June 2018, 4 people were arrested after illegally harvesting over 400 lbs of white sage from North Etiwanda Preserve in California. Thankfully, white sage is not endangered; but if companies continue to sell it in mass quantities, and as climate change and record-breaking droughts further stress the ecosystems in California, it could easily land on the list of threatened species.

I believe in the healing and spiritual properties of using Sage, but in a ethical way not just its use but the way is harvested. This is the reason why it's very important to let you know that all my Sage is ethically and legally harvested in California. This to me is very important and I hope it is to you as well.
