OPAL: The name Opal is derived from the Latin opalus and the Sanskrit upala, meaning ‘precious stone.' There are many different types of Opals that can be found around the world. Australia produces 97% of the worlds opal, but deposits of opal have been found in Brazil, Ethiopia, Mexico, Peru and the USA. Their crystal structure is unlike anything else in nature, millions of tiny spheres closely packed together in an amorphous mass. Their colors and finish are so eccentric that we had to invent new words and phrases for them – opalescent, iridescent, play-of-color, opaline and many more.
You maybe familiar with names such as Ethiopian Welo Opal, Australian opal, Black Opal, Prewcious Opal, Boulder Opal and then the less precious kinds of Opals such as the beautiful stone, Pink Opal from Peru.
