Malachite Precaution and Dangers Everyone Should Know

Today I want to address something and offer some words of advice. I see this picture going around on the internet via social media (FB and IG) and people be like... OMG I want this, I want this!!! Malachite is amazing, not only for it's beauty but for it's metaphysical properties as well. HOWEVER, Malachite is a mineral that must be handled with care as it can be toxic if used in the wrong form. For Example using Malachite in tumbled or polished form is perfectly fine. The Malachite in this image as been cut and polished, in Jewelry form Malachite should also be used only in polished as one must exercise much caution when handling malachite in it's raw form. This is because Malachite can contain up to 70% copper (II) oxide (CuO), an inorganic compound and it can be especially toxic when it is broken down or when it is in the process of being broken down.  It is also hazardous to breathe in malachite dust, so using it in the bathroom should ONLY be in polished form. Having a malachite bathroom as in the picture can be quite beautiful yes, but when it comes to Malachite (as with some other mkinrals) one must exercise caution and know well thew mineral they are using and how to work with it, as some can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

Malachite is also another of the minerals that should NEVER be used to make Crystal elixirs or any kind of Crystal water to be ingested. Great care must be exercised in working with Malachite, as it can be poisonous in its raw state.

Stones like malachite and Azurite in it's raw form when touched or held in the hands can release the mineral powder which can be dangerous if it is inhaled, ingested, or contacted by exposed skin, the effect can be injurious to your health.

I know many will say, "well in this bathroom the Malachite is  polished, so it should be ok" and the answer is that one should be cautious when using Malachite. Yes in polished form it is perfectly safe to use, but stones can break too and many things can happens. My older sister for example, don't ask me why but my mom will tell us stories of her waking up in the middle of the night and finding my sister liking and chewing on the wall.

Again, don't tell me "this sounds crazy" lol because I know, but it is a true story. Maybe this is the reason why when I saw the Malachite bathroom, my sister's weird habit as a child came to mind and made me think, how dangerous that would have been if imagine, we had a Malachite bathroom at home like this;-)

As a mother myself one thing that comes to mind will be for small children or animals to find a piece of the Malachite's sink cracked or broken and lick or bite the stone.

I myself love Malachite for many reason, but warning and educating others about Crystals & Stones that posses some risks is as important and the ethical thing to do. Working with Crystals and healing stones can be incredible rewarding and beneficial but the more we know about them, will allow us to make informed decisions for themselves, our families and homes.

I also posted years ago in an article on my website about this called, "Crystal precautions, a list of potentially toxic minerals."

This by all means is not intended to scare you about the Crystals that you and I love so much!! but to educate you and provide some helpful information for you;-)

Some minerals contains poisonous elements, such as copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Which can be a problem if you plan using your crystals to create gem elixirs.

Lapidary professionals could tell you how dangerous is for them when they're cutting these kind of minerals.

There is actually a great post I came across, where a professional share his very own story of how cutting and working with these minerals without proper protective wear was making him sick.

If you are a jewelry maker or a Crystal enthusiast without much knowledge of the dangers of "some" minerals, and you cut, or hand polish malachite stones you can unknowingly be putting your health at risk. With the dangers of handling and working with raw malachite, precautions should be taken. These are things everyone working with crystals should know, and this is the reason why I wanted to share with you.

I hope you enjoy the information I share with you and that you find it helpful and informative.
